When people think of the Western North Carolina mountains, they often think of the crowded overlooks of the Blue Ridge Parkway or the bustle of downtown Asheville. But those of us lucky enough to live here know that the real magic is found in the quiet corners.
If you’re staying with us at The Yellow House, you’re perfectly positioned to explore the “locals-only” side of the Smokies. Here are five hidden gems you won’t find on the typical tourist brochures.

1. Mornings with the Elk of Cataloochee Valley
While the rest of the world is sleeping, the mist is lifting off the floor of the Cataloochee Valley to reveal one of the East Coast’s most majestic sights: the wild elk. Reintroduced to the park in 2001, these massive creatures rule the meadows at sunrise.
The Yellow House Tip: Grab a to-go coffee from our Butler’s Pantry or arrange one of our grab-and-go breakfast boxes to take with you and head out 30 minutes before dawn. The winding 45-minute drive is half the fun, and you’ll likely have the 19th-century schoolhouse and church all to yourself.
2. Pizza in the Pasture: Ten Acre Garden
Imagine eating a wood-fired sourdough pizza, topped with ingredients grown ten feet away, while sitting on a picnic blanket as the sun sets over the surrounding mountain peaks. Ten Acre Garden in Canton offers “Pizza Evenings” that feel like a secret garden party. They are open April through October – check their calendar for opening dates and pizza-making dates and hours.
The Yellow House Tip: It’s a “BYO” atmosphere. Grab a chilled white wine from our on-premises wine selections before you head over.
3. The Museum That Runs: Wheels Through Time
There are museums where you walk quietly past velvet ropes and “Do Not Touch” signs. And then, there is Wheels Through Time in Maggie Valley. While it houses over 350 of the rarest American motorcycles in the world, the museum is also home to unique “one-off” automobiles, vintage mechanical gadgets, and an incredible collection of Americana.
- The Yellow House Tip: If you’re lucky, you’ll walk in just as one of the expert curators kicks over a 1910 Harley-Davidson, filling the air with the roar of a century-old engine.
4. Enjoy a Great Show at HART
With top-notch programming and high-quality production, Haywood Area Regional Theater has a packed annual calendar of great shows. Wildly diverse, their shows and events are excellent and always worth checking out.
The Yellow House Tip: Plan an evening out with dinner and a show: let us make a reservation for you at one of our local farm-to-table restaurants before you head to the theater.
5. Stress Relief at Winchester Creek Farm
Need a break from the “real world”? Spend an hour with a miniature cow or a fluffy alpaca. Winchester Creek Farm offers intimate tours of their working farm, where the animals are as friendly as the neighbors.
The Yellow House Tip: This is the ultimate “low-impact” activity. It’s relaxing, adorable, and only a short drive back to your suite for an afternoon nap.
Your Home Base on Plott Creek
After a day spent chasing waterfalls, spotting elk, and exploring historic districts, there is nothing quite like pulling into the driveway of The Yellow House. Our porch swings are waiting, the creek is bubbling, and the quiet of the mountains is yours to enjoy.
