Haywood County and Western North Carolina is full of wonderful things to do to make the most of your summer! Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, an avid amateur photographer, lover of the arts, or just looking to unplug and unwind, Western North Carolina has you covered. Here are our top 5 picks for late summer fun in Western North Carolina!

Take a Tube Ride the Oconaluftee River:
This is one of our favorite summer activities here in Western North Carolina, especially on a hot day. While there are several tubing outfitters in the area and a couple of different rivers to pick from, our personal favorite river to float down is the Oconaluftee River in Cherokee. This river features some class I/II rapids – just enough to get you a wet and to give you a little thrill. One great outfitter we really like is Cherokee Rapids, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Insider Tip: We highly recommend wearing aqua shoes or aqua socks to protect your feet and give a little more traction in the water.

Try Fly Fishing in a Mountain Stream:
When a local guide offered to take me out to fly fish, I was hesitant at first – but this proved to be one of the most relaxing, memorable, and delightful summer experiences ever. The rivers in the area are pristine and well-stocked with various types of trout, and there is no better way to spend a day than fishing. While fly fishing may be unfamiliar to many people, it is a rich and rewarding experience. Insider Tip: If you are new to fly fishing, consider booking a local guide; they know all the best spots and will help coach you through the mechanics of the art of fly fishing.

Visit Local Waterfalls and Swimming Holes:
Western North Carolina is covered with hundreds of spectacular waterfalls and swimming spots just waiting to be enjoyed. Popular waterfalls include Looking Glass Falls and Dry Falls, but other lesser-known gems in the immediate area include Mingo Falls, Moore Cove Falls, and Wildcat Falls. If you want to get wetter still, check out the various swimming holes in the area like Skinny Dip Falls and Sliding Rock.

Cool off on the Blue Ridge Parkway:
On the rare summer day when it gets too warm in town, head up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and enjoy cooler temperatures! Due to the higher altitude, the Parkways is usually about 10 degrees cooler – a perfect way to enjoy the spectacular views while also staying cool!

Take in a show at HART:
The Haywood Arts Regional Theater is a local treasure, with great plays, musicals, and shows throughout the year. This is one of the best deals in theater around, and the quality of the productions is excellent. You can see their event calendar and buy tickets on the HART website.
The Yellow House is a great place to stay while exploring all of Western North Carolina! Enjoy our signature 3-course breakfast each morning and relax in the cool shade with a cold beverage on the rocking chairs on the front porch. Our cozy rooms and suites are the ideal place to stay during your summer getaway!
