lakeside path with mountain views

  • Lake Junaluska: Flat and friendly, Lake J is less of a hike and more of a traditional 2.3 mile walking path. A favorite of the locals, it is THE place to stretch your legs any day of the week. Insider Tip: Keep your eyes open for the swans, geese, a variety of duck and bald eagles who make the lake their home.

Blue Ridge Parkway Overlook

  • Devil’s Courthouse: Located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, this massive outcropping of rock is stunning. It has a half-mile trail to the peak that is relatively short but deceptively uneven. Insider Tip: Upon reaching the peak, rest and enjoy the panoramic views of four different states.
  • Black Balsam Knob: This moderate 1.4-mile hike is well worth the effort. Stunning views from this grassy bald showcase all the surrounding mountaintops. It is also one of the most popular spots for proposals because of the gorgeous view.
  • The Pinnacle: This is one of the more challenging trails around and one of our favorites. Built on an old logging trail, the path weaves up the mountain to the Pinnacle. This rocky peak showcases views of nearby Sylva (which is a great town to stop and explore after your hike). Insider Tip: wear good hiking shoes and bring poles for this one as it is very rocky and challenging.

FAQs about Hiking in Western North Carolina:

What should I wear for hiking?

Long pants are recommended for all hikes (for tick and poison ivy protection). Bring appropriate layers based on the weather, and consider keeping a waterproof jacket, raincoat, or slicker in the event of a sudden downpour. Note that there is a 10-15 degree swing in temperature based on your elevation – it is always much cooler up at the peaks than down in the valleys, so plan your wardrobe accordingly.

What footwear should I bring for hiking?

Comfortable hiking shoes are very highly recommended. If you plan to hike anywhere you will be crossing water or streams, or in the case of rain, water-resistant shoes are a big plus.

What should I bring on my hike?

If you are planning a hike of any distance (3+ miles), be sure to bring water, a snack, sunscreen, and your cell phone. There are over a million acres of hiking areas in Western North Carolina, and on occasion, people do get lost. Make sure you have your cell phone charged up in case you have an emergency.

Do I need hiking poles?

Most of the trails in Western north Carolina are packed dirt and the inclines are not especially steep, so in most cases poles are not going to be necessary. However, if you are attempting one of the few rocky trails (like the Pinnacle), or if you prefer to have a little extra support for your knee joints, hiking poles might be a good idea.

What should I do to protect myself from ticks when hiking?

Ticks are active year-round in Western North Carolina, so wearing long pants (vs. shorts) will help reduce our likelihood to pick up any unwanted little travelers along the way. Wearing an insect repellant effective to repel ticks is also a very important precaution. Always check for any stowaways when you return from your hike.
